"Gloria" - America's first air mail rocket
Popular Mechanix presents the May 1936 issue of Popular Mechanics, which reported on America's first rocket mail attempt. The rocket, named Gloria, was actually a rocket glider. The motor was developed by the Rocket Airplane Corporation of America and vehicle was designed by the Guggenheim School of Aeronautics. It was powered by a blend of three components: 1. liquid oxygen; 2. a blend of alcohol, gasoline, methane, and "other liquids", and; 3.compressed nitrogen gas. Well, that sounds like more that three but that's what the motor's three tanks held. This mixture managed to propel Gloria for only a few hundred feed.
