Spaceport America fails to get its trifecta

Clark Lindsey reports that the the Spaceport America tax has apparently failed to pass in Otero County, New Mexico. The Alamogordo Daily News reports that, with only the absentee votes left to count, only 47.74 percent of the voters voted in in favor of the tax. Clark explains why it may have failed and why this wasn't that a big deal.
Two other counties that are more closely tied to the facility did pass tax referendums previously. The failure of this one is not especially surprising considering that (1) it seems pretty clear that the project would proceed anyway and (2) voters don't usually go for additional taxes during an economic crisis. Perhaps the state will eventually try the vote again after the project has made some construction progress and with some sweeteners added in for the county.
