Ike at 11:30 AM PST

Ike hit Galveston and Houston hard, but it sounds to me that it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Haven't heard that much however. Thankfully, no reports of deaths. Galveston flooded but not washed away with a max tide of a mere 12.4'. This doesn't fit with the estimates I heard on yesterday evening's news reports, but this one may be scientific vs. an estimate by uncalibrated eyeballs watching the waves slap the seawall. 7' of water on the bay side (Strand and UTMB). At 11:30 AM EST still a CAT-1 over Galveston Island. Some bayside towns like LaPorte are under water. I'm anxious to hear about Clear Lake. Yeah, gas prices are rocketing up although I've heard no specifics of any damage to refineries, pipelines, etc. $5.23 in Texas and still moving. Shortages also. The prices were rising yesterday in the DC area but I haven't seen or heard the price this AM. Bush International shut down. In Houston, widespread power outages, downed trees, contaminated water supplies, etc. Windows in the upper stories of the 75 story Chase tower were broken out. The venerable Brennan's burned down and there were several injuries.

Talked to friends in West U. and they are fine but without power. Landlines were working. Can't raise relatives in Sugar Land but don't suspect major problems.

That's about it. Since it hit in the dark and there are so many power problems, the photo documentation is lagging.
