Pictorial history of the Wallops Flight Facility

The Smithsonian Air&Space blog has a photo-essay about Wallops (and now the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport): Canaveral Junior - Wallops Island gets ready for the big time. It was hard to choose a representative sample from the 16 photos presented. I have seen many of them and have even posted a few. This night launch photo of a 1963 Scout launch tickled my fancy this morning. This one obviously did not go so well. I had forgotten that the name Scout wasn't the word for an advance explorer but rather stood for Solid Controlled Orbital Utility Test. However, I guess that was also chosen to imply the word's definition too. Credit: NASA.
