  1. I'm just a little confused here. I thought you had to be going 24,500mph to escape Earth orbit. Or 6.8mps. This asteroid is only moving at 4.8mps. Why doesn't it get trapped in Earth's orbit?

    1. The commonly quoted value escape velocity assumes a launch from the surface of the Earth (with some other assumptions). Escape velocity decreases as you get further from the center of the mass being escaped from.
