xkcd's 'what if' answers the question, "How many model rocket engines would it take to launch a real rocket into space?" I went ahead and stole the design, assuming it is available on the same Creative Commons license as the comic. You'll have to follow the link to get the actual answer.

Really cool simulation, and the orbital rocket design is just crazy. He does get the largest non-nuclear explosion point wrong, the N1 explosion was far smaller than the largest non-nuclear blasts. A few were in the 4 KT range. Although the energy released in the burning of that rocket fuel plus the blast could have surpassed 4KT perhaps.
