At least that's what Mechanix Illustrated said back in 1951 - Space Cops to Enforce World Police. Back then, they barely had von Braun and is V2. However, von Braun was already publishing his concepts of chemically powered rockets and was giving hyper-optimistic time frames of when the technology could be available. This article describes a three stage rocket with a spaceplane as a top top stage. The author mentions that it is similar to Von Braun's concept, differing because it has an air breathing engine for final descent and landing. It does look like von Braun's Ferry rocket as published in Hagerty's Spaceship Handbook. I'll have to go back and review Hagerty to see the details about von Braun's concept. (via Modern Mechanix)
